Why Twitter Matters

As we discussed at the WBT, I am using Twitter the in the same ways as you suggested above: as a personalized newsfeed and to tap into interesting people. It’s interesting that other sites like LinkedIn have integrated with Twitter and to me it illustrates the point that all of these sites are really about forming relationships with people in the first place.

Something that I have recently learned: seek to have conversations with people (or join an existing conversation when you have something to add) and don’t collect followers like baseball cards.

As you mentioned, it’s MUCH more about what you say (quality) than how many people you are saying it to (quantity).

I agree with everything you said. Twitter is all about making news you care about come to you, and finding like-minded people in the process. that’s a really good feature i didn’t talk about in the post.

joining and having conversations on Twitter is great, but i’ve had some trouble finding the conversations before they’re over. how do you find conversations in progress? do you use something like tweetdeck? or are you just really good at spotting conversations in your feed?

haha i agree that followers are not the point of Twitter. but i do think that a large number of followers brings a certain amount of… i don’t want to say “clout,” but perhaps “influence” is better. for example, because of his 1.6 million followers, @wilw (Wil Wheaton) singlehandedly put Yakkity Sax on “trending US” on Mar 18 with 1 tweet:

There is nothing in the world that can not be made more awesome by the application of Yakkity Sax.

so yeah, followers aren’t the point of Twitter, but they sure can make it interesting. :)

I definitely use TweetDeck (mostly to be able to manage multiple Twitter accounts and keep an eye on LinkedIn all in one place).

Good question about being able to tap into conversations in real time. I look for two people that I follow replying to each other and follow conversations that way. It does take some time to do this since I usually read through all of my tweets in order to figure out that this is going on. I guess being able to read all of the posts would be one advantage of following a smaller number of people.

Time might be something for you blog about in the future: how to make efficient use of Twitter? (i.e. how to be interesting and apart of the conversation-without killing your whole day). I have heard several people talk about Twitter being a time drain and have definitely experienced the same!

I think the people that really are on top of this stuff get a lot of use out of filtering and searching old posts. I use search.twitter.com to find info but I’m sure there are better ways (including TweetDeck).

I once got caught up in the amount of people following our accounting business and was excited when he hit a couple of hundred of followers. Then I clicked on someone who had 50,000 and got a little sad haha. One of the guys in the book who has a huge Twitter following said he always uses filtering and searching since it’s impossible to read through what everyone posts.

I gave it 6 months and found it to be more of an irritant with better models out there for getting my news.
