Layoffs Considered... Beneficial?
The United States is in the midst of its worst recession since the Savings and Loan crisis of the 1980s, and arguably before that. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down almost 25% from its all-time high in October 2007 to $10,850. The NASDAQ is down about 15% from its all-time high from November 2007. But while seeing layoffs in this economic climate hasn’t been a surprise, the sheer number of them has. The unemployment rate has more than doubled since April 2008 to 9.7% as of the time of this writing (March 2010), and Forbes estimates the number of layoffs since November 2008 at the Fortune 500 alone to be 697,448. And the problem is likely worse than that due to “shadow layoffs” that aren’t reported.
But you know layoffs are a big deal when they spawn an Oscar nominated film starring George Clooney.
It was this problem (layoffs, not the George Clooney movie) that my friend Puja and I spent a brunch at the Cheesecake Factory discussing. My stint at IBM taught me everything I never wanted to know about layoffs, but I was curious what she thought of them. Having spent time working at Freescale as both an engineer and a marketer an HR worker, she has a unique view of why layoffs happen at different places in a company, and now that she’s gone back back to school at Notre Dame for her MBA, she has an even more interesting view of why layoffs happen. So we spent a couple hours flexing our developing business muscles and generally geeking out.
The first things to come up were the textbook answers to the question of why layoffs happen: they stimulate technical innovation by allowing new, hungry talent to float to the top; they let the company’s vision evolve as new management takes over the helm; and they cut costs because younger talent costs less than older talent, in terms of both salaries and benefits. Naturally, the question of how to avoid getting laid off yourself came up next, and her answer surprised me:
You can’t. So don’t.
Now, my friend Puja is not known for her hard nose, so the apparent callousness was unexpected. But she went on to explain that layoffs — while terrifying, especially at first — are frequently good things for everyone involved. While these stories are familiar, I find them hard to believe, at least as far as the firee is concerned. But she told me to take her point to completion: if you know you’re going to be laid off at some point, then you should prepare to be laid off at some point. Her idea resonated with me, especially in the context of the current economy:
You should live your life and conduct your finances at all times as if you’re going to be unable to work for twelve to eighteen months starting right now. If you’re not, you’re doing it wrong, and you should reassess your habits.
This makes sense completely independent of layoffs in an I’m-a-boy-scout-and-I’m-always-prepared kind of way. For example, what if you get in an accident? But in the context of the current economy, where we’re in deep trouble because we’ve all been spending at (or past!) our limits, and her implicit assumption that a layoff is impending, it doesn’t just make sense, it’s The Right Thing.
If you’re always prepared for 12-18 months without income, a layoff can be an extremely positive thing, no matter when it happens. Have a hobby you’ve been meaning to take up? A layoff gives you lots of free time to do just that. Feeling stressed? Sleep in. Want to spend more time with the kids? Have at it. Think your tongue would stick to the Eiffel tower in the middle of winter? Let’s find out. (I triple dog dare you.) And catching up with old friends is a lot easier when you don’t have to do it around your work schedule. Even more importantly, a layoff can be an incredible opportunity to do good works, like volunteering your time or contributing to open-source projects. Or even to chase your dreams. If you can position yourself right, a layoff can give you that push to do things you haven’t been able to do because you couldn’t leave the relative safety of your job.
Of course, it’s not always possible to prepare yourself for a layoff this way, and this won’t work for everyone every time. (I imagine this would be hard if you had 2 kids in college, for example.) But if more people planned their finances for a rainy day as opposed to for a new flatscreen TV, this country might be in better straights financially. (Certainly, this is not a new idea. But if it’s an oldie, it’s a goodie too.)
At any rate, while she hadn’t said anything I hadn’t heard before, Puja helped me understand why those things were true. And she made me understand so hard that I now put money aside every month specifically for a rainy day. Just in case. After all, it’s easier to save now than when I have two kids in college, right?
Saving is good
I think saving a year’s worth to live off is essential, everyone should do this. The best way to do it is to just take it out of your paycheck immediately. I setup a direct deposit that takes x% and immediately puts it into this emergency fund. I don’t see it otherwise. This also enabled me to take a risk for awhile and starting my own business. If you don’t do this… you are trapped a bit.
The way I see it is that layoffs are just the nature of the business. Sometimes it’s fair, sometimes it’s not. In the end, you’re in control of your life and you should be always try to improve your situation. I can’t count how many times I’ve had people get calls for a recruiter or someone and they wouldn’t talk to them because they are “content” where they are. My policy is to ALWAYS talk to people, always network and don’t be afraid to take reasonable risks. I can write a diatribe on how stupid people are when it comes to seeking and landing new opportunities.
